Girls Basketball

Field Girls Manhandle Akron Ellet 62-22, Mogadore Beats "The Elms" 59-23

The Lady Falcons (8-7) traveled to Akron on Saturday January 18th for a game with the Ellet Orangemen and came away winning 62-22 in a game that really was even that close.  Maria Sziva led the Falcons with 25 points, and in doing so became the all-time leading girls scorer in Field basketball history.  Sydney Kline added 18 points.  Field plays at Coventry on Wednesday January 22nd at 7:00 PM.

Mogadore (5-10) went to Akron on Monday January 20th for a game with Our Lady of the Elms.  The Elms is struggling through another awful season and after Mogadore's 59-23 win their season sank lower to an 0-15 record.  The Wildcats led at the half 24-9, but then put the game out of reach with a 20-6 third quarter.  In Mogadore's fifth win of the season, Carley Hickle scored 12 and Hope Murphy netted 10.   Ten of the twelve members of the Mogadore team scored as coach Jenn Rich substituted early and often.  The Wildcats go to Garrettsville on Wednesday January 22nd for a 7:00 PM game with Garfield.   The G-Men are 9-4 on the year and 6-1 in the league.

Boys Basketball

Falcon Boys Snap Losing Skid, Whip Ravenna 48-45, Wildcats Lose Close One To Crestwood 77-74

The Field Falcons (1-13) went to Ravenna (3-10) and broke their 13 game losing streak by sneaking past the Ravens 48-45.  Jacob Gartner paced the Falcons with 20 points, his second straight game with 20 or more.  As the season progressed, smart money would have pointed to next Tuesday's game at home against Rootstown as the best chance for Field to break the losing streak, as the Rovers are 2-11 on the year and play in a lower state division, but the win against Ravenna was impressive on all levels.  The chance for a two game winning streak is good.  Rootstown (2-11) comes to Field for a 7:00 PM game on Tuesday January 21st.

In a game that had several big scoring swings, the Crestwood Red Devils prevailed in the end to beat the Mogadore Wildcats 77-74 on Friday January 17th in Mogadore.  Mogadore started off strong and led by 52-40 at one point only to find themselves trailing 70-62 seven minutes later.  The game has serious implications in the Wildcats hopes to win the Portage Trail Conference County Division title for a sixth straight year.  Mogadore goes to 8-2 on the year and  5-2 in the league, while Crestwood improves to 11-1 and 7-1 in the league.  Garrettsville came in the evening with one league loss, but no score is yet available.  For the Wildcats, Lukas Swartz had 32 points, including 15 for 16 at the charity line, while Aaron Morris had 15 and Nate Stephenson scored 10 points.  Leading Crestwood was Blaze Angle with 21 points.  The Wildcats step out of the league on Tuesday January 21st for a game with Akron City Series opponent Kenmore-Garfield.  The game with the Rams will be in Mogadore at 7:00 PM.

Wingfoot Lake State Park is Suffield's only park.   It was opened by the Ohio State Parks & Recreation Department in 2009.  Goodyear had operated the park since the 1960's as a private playground for its employees and for corporate retreats.  As the company footprint grew smaller in the Akron area Goodyear decided to close the park in 2006.  To learn more about the park, such as rental of the facilities, visit the park's website:  http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/wingfootlake
