03-13-2018.....Trustees Field Tough Questions From Crowd
On Tuesday March 13th the Suffield Township Board of Trustees entered the Suffield Community Room to find a much larger than usual crowd. Fifteen souls braved the cold weather to attend. Chairman Tom Calcei called the meeting to order and choose to acknowledge two young men in the gathering who each had questions for the trustees. Rusty Carpenter and Caden Burgs, members of Suffield Boy Scout Troop 262, are working toward a merit badge and as part of their endeavor, they came to see local government at work. They were allowed to ask the trustees several questions. Rusty was curious on the trustees take on the current drug crisis, and Caden was concerned about what young people could do to make their township better. Opinions were given and suggestions made, but it was Trustee Jeff Eldreth who uttered the most profound statement when he said, "show me your friends, I'll show you your life".
Moving on, the trustees listened to a lengthy presentation by a Brimfield resident who is hoping to create a playground for county-wide special needs children. The trustees were sympathetic to her request, but firmly stated that Suffield Township owns no vacant property on which to build a public park. More water problems came to light. In addition to the seemingly yearly problem of flooding in the southwest corner of the township around Wingfoot Lake, a Manning Road residents Duane & Mary Davidson told the trustees that there is a high-water situation along the 300 block of Manning Road. Trustee Jared Phillip said he would work with the Davidsons. He mentioned that a new property owner next to the Davidsons was planning to make alterations to his property that would at least partially resolve the problem. Phillip had mentioned that Wingfoot Lake was four feet over its correct level, which was mandated by a 1912 court decision to be set at 1147 feet above sea level.
Jeff Eldreth said a beaver was damming up a culvert along Palm Road. He asked the trustees to approve up to $350 to hire a trapper to catch the beaver and relocate it to somewhere else in America. He also said that Suffield Township Clean Up Day would be Saturday May 12th. The hours will be 8:00 AM until noon. Old tires, batteries and electronic can be brought to the Road Department that day for disposal. No tube-type televisions or tubed monitors will be accepted. Some discussion was had on purchasing the necessary equipment for the Road Department to use when mowing the cemeteries and township property this summer. No final decision was made and no money was allotted at this time. Trustee Tom Calcei said that mowing will begin soon, thus they should make a decision at the next meeting on what to buy and where to buy at. Jeff Eldreth said that mowing began on April 22nd last year.
Adam Bey, zoning inspector, said that the local rumor mill is up and running. One rumor he wanted to squash in no uncertain terms was that there are absolutely no plans to extend Palm Road south from Trares Road to State Route 224. Some surveyor flags near Palm Road are there due to a proposed fence along the cemetery.
Trustee Jared Phillip said that he has been in contact with officials at ODOT and is planning for more discussions on how Suffield Township and ODOT might pool their resources. Already on the table is talks on salt usage and salt storage. It's always good to have new faces in the crowd. Tonight Bill Rufener, Duane & Mary Davidson, Margee Kimmel and Marco Massoli shared their evening with the trustees and crowd.
The trustees next meet on Tuesday March 27th at 7:00 AM. The Zoning Commission meets on Wednesday March 14th at 7:00 PM. Both meetings are at the Suffield Community Room. The Board of Zoning Appeals has no hearings scheduled. The Suffield League's Easter Egg Hunt is Sunday March 25th at 1:00 PM at the Wingfoot Lake Park.
