07-11-2017....TRUSTEES APPROVE 2018 PRELIMINARY BUDGET
The Suffield Township Board of Trustees held two separate meetings on Tuesday July 11th. First they discussed income streams and expected expenses for 2018 and ultimately approved a preliminary budget of $2,143,102, as presented by Fiscal Officer Lori Calcei.
The second meeting was mostly routine business. Dana Heffner of First Energy was on hand to clarify First Energy's position on previously awarded grants to the township. She also spoke of an Energy Conservation Kit that is available to residential customers. Click here for more info on the kit. Trustee Dave Vartenuk said that the Zoning Commission meeting for Wednesday July 12th has been postponed until Tuesday July 18th at 7:00 PM. Jim Albertoni spoke to the trustees on his concerns about a gun range that is operating in the 300 block of Randolph Road. Bernard Trares of Carriage House Lane came to the meeting to ask about the progress in demolishing the house at 1560 Carriage House Lane. This house has been the subject of many complaints over the past twenty or so years. Trustee Tom Calcei said that the trustees are still hopeful that this situation will be resolved some time soon, rather than later. For now the property is in limbo, awaiting to be auctioned at Sheriff's Sale. As of today, this sale has not yet been scheduled.
However, one of the most surprising items of business was Trustee Jeff Eldreth's motion to change the time for one of the monthly trustee's meetings from 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM. This would be the regular meeting on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The issue passed with unanimous consent. It was decided that September 26th would be the first early morning meeting. Trustee Tom Calcei had suggested that he would like to have the Road Department Superintendent and the Fire Chief come to the meetings to give their departmental reports in person rather than just be read by a trustee. Changing the meeting times would allow these departmental heads the opportunity to give their reports during their normal work hours. In addition, the unusually early hour was set to allow the trustees to meet early enough to still be able to go to work that day. All three trustees work full time jobs.
The Suffield Township Board of Trustees next meet on Tuesday July 25th at 8:00 PM. The Zoning Commission will meet on Tuesday July 18th at 7:00 PM. The Board of Zoning Appeals will meet on Thursday July 20th at 8:00 PM. Best wishes to Ed Vincent, who is still under the weather, and to Dave Duma, who is recovering after a fall from his tractor.
